Victoria will be studying the effectiveness of restoring eelgrass and oysters in close proximity in Newport Bay, CA with an emphasis on how oysters are influenced in the presence of eelgrass. While eelgrass restoration effectiveness has been assessed in relation to oysters, oyster restoration effectiveness in the presence of eelgrass still remains to be explored. The native southern California oyster, Ostrea lurida, has been harvested to unsustainable numbers, and does not enjoy the legal protections that eelgrass does. Growth, size, and density of oysters will be assessed in order to analyze oyster response to a combined eelgrass and oyster restoration project.
