James worked on using species specific primers and polymerase chain reaction ( PCR) based methods to positively identify oyster species as an alternative to sequencing.  Western North American oyster species overlap in their geographic distribution which makes them challenging, even for bivalve experts, to confidently identify morphologically due to their similar appearance. Under the guidance of Dr. Eernisse and Dr. Zacherl, he developed a method based on PCR to genetically identify the native Olympia oyster species (Ostrea lurida) against all the Baja oysters and invasive Japanese oyster (Crassostrea gigas). The identification method he designed is a cost-effective alternative to sequencing.
